Cost and revenue analysis, and customer value mapping facilitated the decision making process for choosing the right home automation segment.

Market and user research has led to the conclusion, that a product in the lighting and climate segment, fits best with tado´s product portfolio. Products in these segment bear the highest potential to be financially successful while aligning with tado´s core competencies and brand values.
tado decided to continue development within climate segment in order to achieve full market penetration.
Conceptualization

A concept was developed for a smart and location-based, climate control device that learns from user behavior and patterns, adjusts the temperature according to individual preferences and allows for controlling the AC remotely.
Based on user research, persona and use scenarios were created. In addition, location-based tracking technology was developed, hardware components specified and use flows for the controlling application defined.

Set your preferred temperature at any time of the day. tado learns your routines and when and where you are at various times in your apartment and adjusts the temperature accordingly, throughout the whole day to suit your needs. In this way, tado° helps you save up to 40% on your AC energy costs.
Proof of concept & Go-to-Market
A marketing campaign was launched via social media channels in order to assess consumer interest in the product idea, by allowing consumers to subscribe for an early pilot phase. Based on the number of subscriptions, tado° decided to invest into the product and started their own crowd-funding campaign to collect funding for the production. The product was successfully commercialized and is today part of tado°´s product portfolio.
